VTS course programme Autumn 2006

5 Sept: Introduction to the half day release: aims of VTS, the new GP and MRCGP curriculum.
Planning our learning: identifying learning needs, clarifying learning objectives and choosing appropriate learning methods.

12 Sept GPR induction day
(for those not attending this there will be half -day release open forum where we will discuss hot topics and anything else of interest.)

19 Sept. Awayday What is general practice?
What is the future of GP? (Implications of current NHS reforms for general practice including competition and practice based commissioning.)
Careers and planning for the future.

26 Sept Critical reading skills
We will review the framework and terminology used in evaluating qualitative and quantitative studies, looking at examples of good papers of both types.

3 October EBM and guidelines
We will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of EBM in primary care.

10 October Gynaecology (Ruth Cochrane, consultant gynaecologist).
Management of menorrhagia and pelvic pain in primary and secondary care.

17 October Dementia (Dr Alice Roberts, consultant in old age psychiatry)

24 October Medical ethics (Louise) and planning for next term

31 October Health Protection Unit
(looking at TB, chlamydia, HIV, Tuberculosis, notifiable diseases relevant to GP)

7 November Headache (GP specialist in headache at Kings)

14 November: Complaints (Mary Probert, retired practice manager) and planning for next term

21 November: Away-day: Culture and medicine, consultation role plays with actors
